Moses was a great man of God. He was the person that Heavenly Father chose to lead the Children of Israel out of slavery, and this was a very challenging ordeal. They had been in slavery a very long time and many of them would not follow God’s instructions and statues. To say the least, they were a difficult people to lead. God performed several miracles through Moses, and it wasn’t because Moses was so perfect that God chose him to do these extraordinary works. Like all of us, Moses was not without sin, but he was obedient and followed God’s instructions. He humbled himself before the Lord, and Moses also recognized that it was truly God who did all the hard work. All Moses had to do was have faith in God and then walk in this faith as he obeyed God’s instructions. Repeatedly, Moses went before Pharaoh, and each time Pharaoh hardened his heart. Pharaoh’s merciless reaction happened exactly as God had told Moses it would. This gives us incredible insight into how God moves, and what He will and will not do. As a very young person, reading the record of Moses and seeing how ruthless and merciless the Pharaoh of Egypt was, I couldn’t understand why God just didn’t go ahead and put the whammy on old pharaoh. He could have wiped him out in less time than a blink of an eye, but God didn’t do it that way. God is all powerful, all knowing, and everywhere present. I had always known this, and that’s why I couldn’t quite grasp the concept of God not handling Pharaoh right away, because he deserved it, I thought. He was diabolically wicked, yet, God worked through Moses, giving him instructions that would methodically prompt Pharaoh to release God’s people. This should put to rest the notion of God violating the order and righteousness of His Word or our free-will. He always does things in order, and 1Corinthians 14:33 assures us of this. This verse tells us that He’s not the author of confusion, but of peace. It is so important to understand this aspect of God’s nature because sometimes people will say that God does things He doesn’t do; blaming Him for the things that satan does. 1John 1:5 tells us that God is all light, and in Him is no darkness at all. There are some really bad people in the world, and most of us would love it if they would have a change of heart and stop doing evil things. God wants this more than we do, but He will not violate their wills. He will not make them change any more than He will make you and I change. He created us in His image, and His desire is that we will align our will with His Will. John 1:1 says that in the beginning, God’s Word already existed. It tells us the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Heavenly Father wants to make doubly sure we understand how important His Word is. He’s elevated His Word above Himself. Isaiah 40:8 informs us that the grass withers and flowers fade, but the Word of God will stand forever. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 24:35(NLT), “Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.” So when the Lord Jesus Christ tells us in Matthew 6:33 to seek God’s righteousness and His Kingdom first, we can see why, because God’s priority is that His Will go forth. His first allegiance is to His Word, for His Word is true. God shows us in His Word about relationship. For instance, Moses had a brother, Aaron. We saw how Aaron supported Moses in the things that God asked him to do. Aaron went with Moses when God would tell him to confront Pharaoh. Throughout His Word, God shows us the relationships of great people of faith because their examples help us to establish a relationship with God. He knows we need help to carry out the things He’s called us to do in the earth, and He wants to help us. He wants our relationship with Him to be strengthened as we trust Him more and more. In John 8:28(NKJV), Jesus Christ said, “And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.” Jesus modeled for us the kind of relationship that the Father desires with each of us. Jesus always fulfilled the Will of God, because He knew that God’s Will is perfect. He knew that God’s Will is love. When he was in his final hours before the crucifixion, Jesus said in Luke 22:42(NLT), “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” Our Lord and Savior was human, and this verse clearly demonstrates the great weight of all he carried. He knew that for the first time in all of eternity, he would die not just a physical death, but a spiritual death; and he would therefore be separated from God. It is beyond the comprehension of any human being to fathom the agony of what Jesus experienced in those moments. He had free-will just as you and I have free-will. He could have said, “Father, it’s too hard. I can’t do it!” But he didn’t do this. He said, “nevertheless, not My will, but Your Will be done.” You and I couldn’t bear what Jesus Christ bore on the cross, but through his example, we learn to lay down our will for the Will of the Father. We learn to make our will secondary to fulfilling all that God has destined us to fulfill. We are not short-changed in making God’s Will and Word our first priority. We are being changed into the likeness of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. When we set our soulish egos, personal agendas, and individual desires aside; when we put all of it in a bag and give it to Jesus, we release our loads and make room for the spiritual treasures God has stored up for us. When we are willing to make the things of God first, it allows us to capture our destinies and live our lives with the power and authority of Jesus Christ, according to God’s Will. ■ Scripture quotations marked (NLT) are taken from the Holy Bible, New Living Translation, copyright © 1996.
